What is Your Definition of Success?

Success is a word that can have an interesting range of connotations, depending on who you're talking to.

So, what is your definition of success?

We tend to hear a lot of talk about success. You'll hear it in conversations, at school, and we even talk about it a lot on this blog. But what meaning does the word success really carry, and what does it mean for you? I thought it would be a good idea to have a look at this word that seems to pop up frequently.

The Definition of Success

According to the dictionary, success is defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. To some the idea of success might mean attaining wealth and popularity. But I think that lasting success and fulfilment involves a lot more than just that. Below we will look at some more specific ways to define success and look at ways we might experience that feeling of accomplishment. At the end of this article, feel free to leave your thoughts on your definition of success. I'd love to hear what you have to say on this topic.

So, here are four specific ways that we might define success. The following definitions are what I believe are key parts of feeling successful and accomplished in life.

Success is Having Faith.

Success is having faith and keeping positive through the ups and downs of life. I believe that success is having spirituality and believing in God. It is very important to know that there is more to life to than the facades we see around us, and to be conscious and responsible individuals. If we live life in a closed box, only thinking of ourselves, we tend to live an empty live.

As well as knowing that life has purpose and is not here by chance, I think that it is also important to have faith in your ability, have faith that your hard work can produce good results. Part of being successful is knowing what actions will produce the desired results and then putting the work in. To be successful, you need to push away pessimistic thoughts, be reasonable, but always believe that you can get what you aim for.

Success is Overcoming Fear.

Success is very much about overcoming fear, because if you don't overcome fear you'll never get anywhere. It's a daily fight. Everyday we meet situations that could seem quite stressful and fear-inducing but success involves the courage to feel the fear and do it anyway.

Being successful means that the fear of staying the same becomes greater than the fear of failure. Thus you do things you would not have initially been comfortable with because you are all about the long term results. Overcoming fear means that you have to get comfortable being uncomfortable. Happy and successful people don't have perfect lives, they are not there because everything 'automatically fell in place'. No, successful people have had to overcome personal challenges including fear to be able to do the things they are now doing.

Success is knowing the difference between wants and needs.

Achieving success also relies on learning to be content. A successful person demonstrates self-control. There are many things that may seem appealing, but being successful is about having good judgement and knowing that you don't need an endless amount of 'stuff' to be happy.

Constantly striving for more wants and desires can become tiresome and frustrating, so successful people think carefully before they set goals. They make sure that the energy and time they spend is worth it, and that their pursuits will be beneficial and practical long term.

Success is Self-Motivation.

There is absolutely no way you can be successful by giving up. Success is a by product of endurance and perseverance. You have to keep motivated and willing to carry on even when things become difficult. If you really want to be successful, you need to know that there are no shortcuts to success and that there is no such thing as an overnight success.

Even when you are tired or  feel like giving up, you need to remind yourself why you started your journey. You have to know how to handle your weakness and always get up when you fall. When you go past your natural instincts to give up and you push harder, then you begin to taste success. You see the wonderful things that can be achieved when you just keep swimming without distractions. Day in day out, you remain resolved to keep going and stay strong no matter what obstacles come your way. That is success.
