Summary
Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's novel, Anne of Green Gables tells the story of a red headed orphan girl with a personality you can't help but love. Despite her "tragical" past, Anne's optimism and imagination have helped her to always see the best in things. Anne's life changes considerably when she is accidentally adopted by the Cuthberts, a brother and sister who thought they were getting a boy to help out on the farm. The Cuthberts decide Anne will have to be sent back to the orphange but before they know it, she has begun to work her way into their hearts.

The book itself is a wonderful story, humorous and moving. The only complaint is that some of the readers are definitely substandard and do a very poor job of portraying the characters. Still worth the listen.

Wonderful story. The changing of readers throughout the story was very distracting. Some of the readers did a good job, but there were a few that were really bad. I had a hard time focusing on the story at times.

This book is a very good and classic read. Anne’s faults prove to be very funny and this book is also a book of self discovery. The only complaint I have is that the narrators change from chapter to chapter I understand that this book is very long and it is free but I wish the narrator is the same the whole book

Awesome story! It's a classic. It has horrible narration though.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and delighted in the jubilant character of Anne Shirley. Most of the narrators were lovely, and although the introductions at the beginning of the chapter thoroughly annoyed me, I found the listening quite enjoyable. Readers will love L. M. Montgomery's fabulously crafted tale and will fall in love with red haired, imaginative Anne Shirley!

I love this story but there are different narrators with every chapter. Some are good and some not so much, some with street noise behind them.

Love the story. Some narrators were better than others.

Lucy Maud Montgomery is turning in her grave at the ruination of her charming coming of age novel in this terrible audio version. What a way to ruin a great book. A pity, since the story is lovely. My first (and last) Librivox recording. A truly painful experience.

It was a sweet book. Simple and not much for plot changes but nice overall. I don't care for the multiple changes in readers. Makes you loose touch with the story because everyone reads so differently.

Profile Avatar

Love the story but the narration was horrible! Was completely annoyed by the changing of narrators every few chapters plus reciting each chapter the name of the book, author & recording info.

I was never a lover of reading; and, I never found the time to read. I the past, I do remember hearing about various books.and classics such as Green Gables; and, now I.have nothing but time; so I' have been really enjoying all the countless titles you have on audiobooks.

I really like this book! I love how several people narrate it so it is more realistic. I love that Anne can just keep talking and talking forever and ever! I sometimes am like that, I can just keep talking on and on so I understand Anne a lot! Great book, highly recommended!

Love the story. Have read it before. But the narration isn’t so good because it keeps switching between people ( some are good others not so much). Still enjoyed it and would recommend.

Profile Avatar

this book is lovely and the story and the characters hold a close place in my heart. I couldn't manage the audiobook however not because of the narrator's themselves but of the quality of the recordings.

Enjoyable book about an orphan child growing up. Many narrators with some better than others. A consistent very good narrator would have made it much better.I listened to it as a free book. I got more caught up with it as she got older…and then wished there was a bit more when it ended.

Profile Avatar

This story was beautiful and sweet and at times funny and heart breaking, some of the narrators were good and some were awful- I kept having to adjust the speeds, I don’t want to criticise as they anyone but I much prefer a single narrator.

Profile Avatar

Most, but not all narrators really good.

Profile Avatar

Ticking off a bucket list and enjoyed this book very much. Narrated very well by most, some not so well, sadly.

Profile Avatar
Debby D.

I really liked the story. Unfortunately the narrations were pretty bad. Almost every chapter had a different person reading. The sound levels were all over the place, sometimes loud sometimes quiet. Only one of the many narrators was any good. One person made everyone sound like they had southern accents. One guy talked like a robot.

Profile Avatar

Wonderful story........However, it was very distracting to have so many different "readers". Rather than listening to the story, the frequent change of narrators made this book confusing. EXAMPLE: the main character, Anne, is a child. Sometimes she sounds wonderfully like a child. The next chapter she is a man from India, with a strong accent. The she is fan older woman from the midwest, with a noted twang. Next up, little Anne is once again a man, only this time she speaks with an Irish accent........come on audiobooks! who was responsible for this travesty? As an aside, one chapter in particular had a constant harsh background "fuzzy traffic-like" HISSSSSS. Poor production quality! Very bad and I would assume embarrassing to you?

I love this story. It’s one of my favorites! BUT stopping between each and every chapter to tell me that it’s librivox and the author and who’s reading and where DRIVES ME NUTS! It makes me want to stop listening!

Profile Avatar

The story is so charming. It’s a great read/listen even as an adult. Most of the narrators are good but some are not great. The interruption between each chapter is also annoying but the story is still worth it.

Profile Avatar

I did not care for there being a different narrator for each chapter. The continuity was damageged.

I'm glad I listened to this classic. I liked it, and I didn't like it. The book is read by several narrators. They are all volunteers, and none of them are all that great. A few of the recordings have white noise in the background that is a little annoying. I increased the listening speed to 1.5. This helped make the listen more bearable. It is a story worth listening to if you can tolerate the amateur recording.

I am a gramma in her 70s and i found this book to be delightful. Sorry I missed reading it as a youngster, but there's a lot in it that adults can appreciate that may be missed by younger people. I did not mind the switching narrators because they all did a fine job bringing the characters to life [except perhaps one, who read only one chapter towards the end.] I, too, don't like the Librivox intros and endings to every single chapter--we know that already!

Profile Avatar
Anonymous

It was annoying to have different narrators and some of them had a rather boring way of speaking. I thought it was unnecessary to have the advertisements in between each chapter. The story was very enjoyable.

Profile Avatar

Lovely story, but the change in narrators was hard to listen to.

Profile Avatar

Most of the narrators were good idk what’s going on with the last few chapters but there horrible background noise in chapter 35. However I have quite enjoyed the book! Definitely worth the listen!

Really enjoyed the story. I look forward to reading the others in the series. I did not enjoy the narration. Having different ones was not good. Some were very interesting but others were dull.

Profile Avatar

This is such a beautiful story. I read the novel decades ago and loved it even more now. The recording was free, which I am very grateful for. Some Readers were decent, but some were very hard to listen to.

I have given five stars for this lovely classic children’s story. However, I’d give only one star for the awful introductions between each chapter, they were really annoying. Also, I didn’t like the constant change of readers either. For these treasons I will not be listening to books from here again.

Profile Avatar

Most of the readers were great but I unfortunately could not stand the narrator for the last half of the book. Made me sick to my stomach the way she read! She was capable of speaking like a normal person because she did here and there. I can't understand why they chose to have her read so much. If they were set on her reading because she's from Prince Edward Island, they could have at least asked her to redo it in a palatable way. But maybe it's just me. Ruined a book I was enjoying so much!

My favourite book always as been no keen on narration

Profile Avatar

Libravox pausing at every chapter for a commercial was distracting and took away from the story.

I have only read the first 10 minutes for my homework and I love it! The only problem is the author -I believe- was sat to close to the microphone as when she said the ‘P’ and ‘t’ it was a bit like spitting

Delightful and enchanting story!! Delicious classic! Most of the readers were very good. Chapter 36 read a bit too fast; nice voice tonality though. Chapter 35 Technical problems. Reader very good but sounds like ocean waves were in the background and the reader was hard to hear.

Profile Avatar
Cheryl M.

I didn’t like the multiple narrators. It was too disjointed. I’ve listened to many of these public audiobooks and they have either one or two narrators with a better outcome

Profile Avatar

Some of the narrators are so dreadful, I had no choice but to fast forward through them. What a terrible thing to have to do to such a wonderful story.

Profile Avatar

The story of Anne is so very charming it was sad to hear it come to and end. The narration wasn't too bad with the exception of using a male voice in a couple of chapters. Especially at the end. Anne is a vivacious character and fully needed a female voice.

How can you do a review of this famous book when you know there are some readers who could quote the book verbatim?! I have read the book before, but it has been such a time that there were parts I had not remembered. I found myself very moved by the pleading of young orphan Ann-withan-e Shirley not to be sent back because she wasn’t a boy. I was very disturbed at how previous ‘carers’ had treated her. I felt a thrill with the young girl as she discovered the beauty of the countryside around her. And as she grew, I yearned as she did for her to do well and excel, was glad when Matthew “put his oar in “, begged her to be forgiving, longed for Marilla to bend a bit more and cried for Anne when sadness came into her life. It was a very good book to return to as an adult and now I shall indulge myself by listening to the books which follow. The readers were ok...all but the one who was way over the top on the yearning aspect to the dialogue!

Enjoyed listening to this book. Some of narrators quite poot

Story was okay. Some of the readers were good some of the readers were bad. The should not add the submissions if they have stubbles over words or messed up during the recording.

Profile Avatar

I enjoyed the story. The readers were ok. Having an extra 1 1/2-2 hours just in disclaimers at the beginning and end of each chapter was painful and annoying.

Profile Avatar

The book is great but the narration is patchy and some of it truly awful.

Great story, but I don't like the narration. I'm not a fan of the narrator "doing voices" when a character speaks.

Profile Avatar
Sherry Brilliant

I love this story and the main narrator was lovely, however the different voices of the characters was distracting. It was especially strange to have an old English woman as the voice of Diana, a young girl. Also the advertisement at the beginning of every chapter is silly and ruins the entire experience. A bad bad bad choice this one.
